“A Phone-Free Day—Without Even Noticing”

(Written from my desk, with Apple Watch and iPad mini by my side)

These days, I often forget where my phone is. At first, I thought it was a sign of memory loss. But now I realize—it’s actually a return to a simpler kind of wisdom. Who still needs to carry the phone everywhere, all the time? Not me, not anymore.

In fact, Kaya and I have jokingly created a little “phone shrine” at home. Take a look at the photo: our two iPhones are standing like ancient relics behind glass, protected by a group of tiny guardian figures. They look like museum pieces, remembered more than used.

So, don’t I suffer without my phone? Not at all. That question shows how deeply the phone has shaped our habits. Let me explain how my current digital life actually works—with tools that truly support me.

Apple Watch: My quiet daily hero

Through all the tough months of cancer treatment, my Apple Watch was a lifesaver. During the hardest days—bedridden after surgery—it helped me stay connected and in control. I used it to play music, listen to podcasts, check the time, set alarms, turn off lights, call family members, read messages, make calls, and check the weather.

This tiny device on my wrist helped me stay independent when I could barely move. It allowed me to handle basic things on my own, which kept my dignity and confidence alive. Staying optimistic was easier when I had something this reliable by my side.

Now that I’m in the later stages of chemotherapy, I often leave the house without my phone. I just wear the Watch. It tracks my walks, helps me pay for things, and even holds my receipts. No phone, no coins, no wallet—just light steps and a free spirit.

The only thing I sometimes miss is taking photos. But even that’s easy to let go of. If I’m not alone, Kaya will snap a picture for me. And honestly, I end up in the frame more often now, which is kind of sweet.

iPad mini + OS26: A whole new machine

The OS26 update blew me away. My iPad mini suddenly feels like a whole new device. Apple used to limit iPad functions to protect MacBook sales, but now it’s like a small Mac in disguise—with a few delightful superpowers.

Why iPad mini? During treatment, I couldn’t carry much. Even a small backpack was too heavy. But the mini was just right. I brought it to parks, hospitals, and anywhere I needed something light and helpful.

With OS26, I can now pair a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and it feels smooth and precise—especially with the new triangle pointer and that beautiful liquid glass magnifier. The whole interface is sharper, friendlier, and more intuitive. It doesn’t even feel “mini” anymore.

At home, I connect it to a big screen and use it with shortcuts like I would on a MacBook. It’s actually more enjoyable to write this way. I forget I’m working on an iPad. And of course, it still supports the Apple Pencil, which gives it a charm no Mac can match.

It’s like having a Mac and iPad rolled into one. For me, Apple Watch + iPad mini has become the perfect team.

The result? A new kind of digital life.

To be honest, I barely remember what it feels like to carry an iPhone anymore. And that’s a good thing.

These days, every day can be a “phone-free day”—not by force, but by choice. And to my surprise, it’s easier than I ever imagined.
